Last week, we began looking at tithing as an essential spiritual discipline for our Annual Stewardship Campaign. I shared how my journey began as a young pastor earning a $12,000 salary, struggling to see how giving ten percent was mathematically possible while managing student debt and living expenses.

The first truth God taught me in that season was that tithing isn’t about money — it’s about trusting God.

This week, I want to share the second principle God laid on my heart as I learned to navigate my finances, faith, and calling:

2. Tithing is About Worshiping God with All That I Have

I quickly learned that celebrating who God is in my life had very little to do with my financial success or material possessions. Through tithing, I embraced true contentment as God showed me time and again how He could provide for me and be enough for me.

While God didn’t always provide in the exact same ways, I learned to feel secure and content, trusting that He would care for my needs. Tithing became a regular act of worship—a physical statement that my security lies in the Provider, not the provision.

In 1 Timothy 6:6–8, the Apostle Paul addresses this exact heart posture:

“Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.”

When we give our tithe, we recognize that everything we have comes from God, and we choose contentment over the relentless pursuit of “more.” It transforms our giving from a line-item expense into a wholehearted act of worship.

Come back next week to read the third truth I learned about tithing along the way!
