Over the past two weeks, we’ve been exploring tithing as an essential spiritual discipline for our Annual Stewardship Campaign. We first looked at how tithing isn’t about money—it’s about trusting God. Next, we saw how tithing is about worshiping God with all that we have and finding true contentment.
This week, I want to share the third truth God laid on my heart:
3. Tithing Is About Obedience Because I Love God
The third truth I learned is that tithing is about obedience rooted in love.
At first, I felt like I had to tithe because of my calling, my vocation, and the expectations of the local church. But those are not the best reasons to tithe. In fact, they are terrible reasons if they remain our only motivation.
Over time, I learned that if I love God, I want to obey Him in every area of my life.
God does not force me to love Him. I choose to love Him — not simply for what He does, but for who He is. Tithing became one expression of that love. It became a way of offering back to God what He had first given to me.
Jesus says in John 14:21:
“Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”
When we tithe out of love rather than obligation, giving becomes a joyful act of devotion and a reflection of our personal relationship with Christ.
